The drilling for therapeutic mineral water in 1975 and the construction of the thermal salt water baths in the mid-1980s was the future-oriented setting of the course for Bad Staffelstein. Health tourism began with the start of the Obermain Therme thermal baths and rose with the increase in tourism opportunities.
Today, approx. 750,000 visitors come to the Obermain Therme each year to enjoy the wellness and health facilities. Because of the continually rising numbers, constructional expansion measures and modernisation projects have been on the agenda in the last decades. SaunaLand was expanded to 15,000m² in October 2014.
In November 1990, the 4-star Best Western Plus Spa Resort opened its gates. With 113 apartments, the hotel is the biggest in the region, and very close to the Obermain Therme.
The
offer of health-relevant facilities was expanded in 1995 with the opening of
the Schön clinic. Each year, 4,700 inpatients and outpatients recover there in
one of the largest rehabilitation centres in Upper Franconia, and make use of
the many modern rehabilitation opportunities in the areas of orthopaedics,
neurology and psychosomatic medicine.
Likewise, in April 1995, the outpatient rehabilitation clinic THERAmed opened in the heart of the spa town. It developed into the largest private preventative, therapeutic and rehabilitation establishment in Upper Franconia. Since 1999, the spa park has topped off its offer with the graduation house. It invites countless visitors to stroll and relax, not just during the summer months.
The origin of balneology in the area is actually out in Lautergrund. In Tiefenthal in the 1950s, the Berlin State Insurance Institution established a sanatorium for lung patients, which today is known as Lautergrund rehabilitation clinic with just 200 beds and offers various spa and rehabilitation possibilities. With the construction of the sanatorium and the friends of the patients, the touristic development had its fragile beginning.
The days of the classic “health cures” are long gone: these days, outpatient rehabilitation programs and follow-up care replace and shorten the once long cures and clinic stays. Bad Staffelstein has developed a wide range of possibilities around the topic of health.
Over 30 doctors, three clinics, the therapy centre of the Obermain Therme and several physiotherapists characterise the upscale medical offer of the spa resort.
Aside from the health-oriented treatment, there is also a wide range of offers in the wellness sector. Wellness massages are offered in the Obermain Therme, in the larger hotels and of course also with the countless health service providers.
A combination of wellness offers in the form of a package deal with an overnight stay is also possible.
