The ground floor deals with the history of the abbey, centering on Banz’ period of prosperity, the 18 th century, and today’s use by the Hanns Seidel Foundation. In the basement, you can find the historical fossil collection and the oriental collection.
The fossil collection features numerous exhibits of life forms of 200 million years ago (Lias strata). The 2.10m long fossilised skeleton of an ichthyosaur skull counts as one of the most spectacular exhibits.
The oriental collection is from Duke Maximilian of Bavaria. On one of his travels, he collected an impressive number of souvenirs which he arranged to be transported to Banz to establish a curio cabinet. Among burial gifts, a mummy and game the duke had brought down himself count among the attractions.
